POLICE OFFICERS’ TRAINING

N.Z. May Co-operate With Australia

(New Zeatana Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 8.

A proposal that New Zealand join with the Australian states in the creation of a college for the. higher training of police officers was being studied, said the Minister in charge of police (Mr P. G. Connolly) today. The Minister said that the Con-troller-General of Police (Mr S. T. Barnett) would visit Australia next week to discuss the proposal with the heads of Australian police forces.

“The conference of police commissioners of New Zealand and Australian states held early last year was unanimous that a police officers’ training college should be created, and since then there has been considerable preliminary investigation of the proposal,” said Mr Connolly. “The Commonwealth Government has indicated that it is prepared to make a suitable building near Sydney available, and it is suggested that New Zealand send five men each year for a fourmonth course at the college. However, many details remain to be settled before any decision on New Zealand’s participation in the scheme can be made, and Government consideration of the matter has been deferred until the Controller-General reports on his return from Australia.” Mr Barnett will return on January 17.
