BOYS’ BRIGADE CAMP

South Island Party Returns

Four hundred and forty members of the 500-strong South Island Boys’ Brigade contingent which attended the brigade’s 75th anniversary camp at Ardmore for 10 days, returned to Christchurch yesterday. The other members had already gone to their homes through Nelson.

The camp was attended by 1600 boys, including representatives from Singapore, Samoa, Nauru, the Cook Islands, Australia and Britain.

The officer commanding the South Island contingent (Mr P. M. Velvin, of Papanui) said yesterday that he was “full of the wonderful behaviour” of his group. Many of the boys were away from their homes for the first time and guards on trains, refreshment room attendants, officers of a shipping company and members of the public had commented favourably on their conduct, he said. The boys had moved in perfect order and had a good time while being thoroughly well behaved. Mr Velvin said that when the inter-island steamer express Hinemoa left Wellington for the trip to Lyttelton on Tuesday evening, the Ist Christchurch Drum and Bugle Band of the brigade was on the promenade deck to play the ship out. Passing Point Jerningham, the band played “Last Post” and the sound carried over the still waters of the harbour very effectively. The master of the ship (Captain W. H. Millard) had shown his appreciation by having the band taken on a conducted tour of his vessel.
