SILVER MENU HOLDERS

Gift For Royal Yacht (From the London Correspondent ot ‘The Press") LONDON, January 1. A set of 24 silver menu holders has recently been presented to the Queen for the Royal Yacht Britannia by the Merchant Taylors’ Company. The holders are the work of one of Britain’s leading designer-craftsmen, Mr Robert E. Stone, of London.

Mr Stofie describes the design of the holders as ‘‘a contemporay dolphin.” It is understood that they will be used on board the Britannia for formal luncheon and dinner parties when guests join members of the Royal family. It is interesting to recall, that a silver ship’s bell was presented by the Merchant Taylors’ Company to Queen Victoria on her eightieth birthday for use in the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert, the predecessor of the Britannia. Another unusual commission fulfilled recently by Mr Stone and his talented daughter was for a green gold brooch presented to Princess Margaret by the British Colour Council.

‘‘My daughter is the one who makes jewellery,” said Mr Stone, ‘‘but this particular piece can best be described as a co-opera-tive effort.” .

The brooch was in the shape of a plane tree leaf—symbol of the council’s exhbition of town and country colours for interior decoration which the Princess visited.

It is an interesting example of the growing popularity of coloured golds which are being used very extensively in the British precious jewellery industry today.
