WORLD GLIDING CHAMPIONSHIP
Christchurch Pilot To Compete
Mr Keith Wakeman, a Chriatchurch top-dreaalng pilot, hai been officially appointed by the New Zealand Gliding Anociation as this country's representative at the world gliding championship to be held in Poland next July. Since Mr Wakeman began flying with the Canterbury Gliding Club in 1953 be has flown a glider across Cook Strait and made the first glider crossing of the Southern Alps. The Slingsby Sailplane Company of England is supplying a special machine for Mr Wakeman to fly. This sailplane will be a modified Skylark 111 of a type which in its original form was the winner of the British national championships' and Is the holder of the New Zealand gain-of-height reZealand party aVe Mr Christopher Wills, son of the former world champion glider pilot, Mr Philip Wills, and Mr Peter Cummins, oi the South Canterbury Gliding Club. Who i» a former member of the Fleet Air Arm.
