Cycling Australian Sets Record For N.Z. Flying Quarter

I. Erowne. of Australia, broke the New Zealand record for the flying quarter-mile at English Park last evening. Browne’s time

was 25.2 seconds. He broke the record of 25.65ec held by Colin Dickinson (Wanganui). Browne also broke Pat Wylie’s Canterbury record of 26.8 sec. Two

other riders, G. Hill (Christchurch) and W. Dalton (Auckland) also lowered Wylie’s time when they covered the distance in 26.25ec.

The large crowd appreciated the good riding by the three Australians, Browne, A. Marchant and J. Perry. Perry was riding under difficulty because of injuries he suffered when he crashed at Waimate at Christmas.

In the final of the one-mile handicap, Marchant and Perry were up with the field at the

end of the first lap and soon after Dalton and Browne joined them. The pace then slowed considerably and no-one wanted the lead with

riders spread over the track. So slow was the pace that the referee

called the race off but his instructions were unheeded or unheard and the race continued. In the last lap on the top banking. R. Fowler and Hill made a break and had a lead of 40 yards from Browne. Coming round the bottom banking, Browne produced great speed to pass the leaders with Hill just shading Marchant for second. Marchant, Browne and Perry filled the first three places in the half-mile scratch race of the three < event omniun and Browne and Marchant were first and second respectively in the flying time trial. In the third round, a one-mile handicap, Marchant rode brilliantly to beat Dalton with Browne third. Results were : Amateur Events One Mile A Grade Handicap.—First heat: A. Marchant (Aust.)
