WAIRARAPA RAM FAIR

World Record Prices

(New Zealand Press Association) MASTERTON, January 8. Features of the Wairarapa Stud Sheep Breeders’ fortieth annual ram fair at Solway Showgrounds today were the world record prices obtained for two stud Southdowns offered on account of the Masterton breeder, R. M. Perry, and the record average for a first run (1200gns), obtained by the Romney breeder, Arthur B. Southey. Compared with last year’s prices. Southdowns had a good sale and the average realisations advanced considerably.

Although down on last year, Romney prices were better than those at Feilding. Top price was 2300 guineas, paid by Mr A. R. Murray, Gore, for a ram offered by Mr Arthur Southey, Masterton. This was a drop of 100 guineas on the 2400gns obtained by Mr O. A. Wyeth, Masterton, last year. Mr Southey’s run of six sold for an average 1200 gns, a Wairarapa record. The world record for a Southdown ram was broken twice during the. sale. Mr R. M. Perry broke the previous record of 1750gns when a ram he offered brought 2100gns from Dalzell Brothers, of Kiwitea, and Illston Brothers; of Marton. Shortly afterwards the record was again broken when Dalzell Brothers and Sainsbury, of Feilding, bid 2200gns for another of Mr Perry’s rams. The previous record was 1750gns, paid at Christchurch in 1955.

Lessons for Census Takers. —A special course to educate Southeast Asian census officials taking part in the United Nations’ world census in 1960 will be held in Tokyo early next year. A spokesman for the National Statistics Bureau said that the course will include new techniques in surveying populations. The agricultural methods of Asia will also be studied during the United Nations survey in 1960.—Tokyo (Reuter).
