Forest Service Buying

The response to the request of the New Zealand Forest Service for supplies of yellow lupin seed has been far in excess of that anticipated; it has been so good that persons who have seed to sell were asked yesterday to postpone its delivery" for several days. "That will give us the chance to cope with what we have got,” said the chief clerk of the Christchurch office of the Forest Service (Mr A. T. Brown). He said that since small advertisements appeared in newspapers just after Christmas, a steady stream of persons had called at the office with varying quantities of the seed in the pod and, up until, yesterday, it was estimated that about one ton and a half had been bought.

The price paid for the seed in the pod is 7d a lb and 2s a lb is paid for the free seed. Although quantities of podded seed could still be accepted, staff and facilities were inadequate to cope with any more podded seed in the next few days, Mr Brown said.

While a reporter was at the office two groups of children—the members of one were about the same height as the sugar bag they carried—called to sell their seed.

The seed is required by the Forest Service for planting on sand dime areas between Foxton and Wanganui to consolidate the ground and to provide a cover before the . areas are planted in trees to prevent the spread inland of the dunes.
