Unclaimed Bicycles

Sir, —It appears that there are some 300 bicycles, in charge of the Christchurch police, whose owners have not bothered to claim them, in spite of repeated letters, in some cases, apprising the owners of the whereabouts of their machines. There must be a lot of fortunate people in this country to whom the cost of a bicycle is a mere bagatelle; which perhaps accounts for the number of children one sees, notably in the vicinity of State housing areas, casually flourishing £5 notes in the shops.—Yours, etc., ILAM.
