STOCK STERILITY REPORTED
Nuclear Accident Suspected Cause (N.Z. Pr«M Association —Copyright) LONDON, January 5. The National Farmers’ Union is investigating reports of sterility among livestock near the scene of a nuclear accident last October. The accident occurred at the Windscale plutonium plant, where an atomic pile became overheated and radio-active material contaminated the surrounding countryside.
For several weeks after the incident the movement of cattle from the area was stopped by Government order.
A statement by the Farmers' Union to-night said:
“We have received facts about various specific instances of sterility amongst livestock on a number of farms, and these are being closely examined by ourselves in conjunction with the authorities (Ministry of Agriculture) to see whether there is any common denominator and whether there is any connexion with the Windscale fallout.”
