“SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR”
A.B.C. Selects Sculler 'NZ Press Association —CopvWoht) (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 1. The Acting General Manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (Mr A. N. Finlay) announced today that the sculler, Stuart MacKenzie, who holds the New Zealand and Australian sculling titles has been selected as “the A.B.C. Sportsman of the Year.”
The judges were the sporting editors of the four daily Sydney newspapers. MacKenzie's selection was unanimous.
He has had an outstanding record since finishing second to Ivanov, of Russia, in the Olympic Games. His wins in 1957 were the New Zealand and Australian titles, the Marlow Regatta, the Diamond Sculls at Henley, the International Sculls in Belgium, and the European title, in which he defeated K. von Fersen, of Germany, in the world record time of 7min 2.Bsec for 2000 metres.
