Motueka’s Good Form For Waikouaiti Cup

The Riccarlon stablemates, Motueka and Tamarisk, will form a powerful bracket ip the £lOOO Waikouaiti Cup, principal event and first leg of the double at the Waikouaiti Racing C’ub’s annual meeting tomorrow. These two members of .h S. Shaw’s team have raced with consistency in their most recent efforts and a win for either would be popular.

Motueka could not match the brilliant finishing run of Prince Filou in the Timaru Cup on Saturday but fought on tenaciously to hold second place. With Prince Filou unlikely to take his place in the Waikouaiti Cup field, Motueka’s task will be eased. Tamarisk, which was elevated to open company with a win in the hack grade over one mile and a quarter at Rangiora on Labour Day, had his first success in the higher grade in the -Rangitata Handicap, one mile and 35 ya v ds, at Washdyke on Saturday. He was again impressive on the same course yesterday when he beat all but Watch and Wait over the same distance. Watch and Wait has been rehandicapped to 9-4 for her Christmas Handicap success yesterday, but in her present form she will have to be respected again. At her previous start against the sprinters at Hororata she was also successful. Both wins were characterised by strong finishing runs which indicate that the additional distance will not prove a bar to further success.

Lbyal Chief, a powerful front galloper, which made most of the pace in the Timaru Cup, will appreciate the shorter distance here, but on recent form may be safely held by Silver King, which is racing solidly at present and Treasure Pond, a last start winner at Wingatui. Of those weighted below 8-0, Keep Time, Peril, Desert Cloud, and Her Ex, which will be bracketed with Watch and Wait make most appeal. Keep Time showed that his race on the first day had brought improvement when he finished fourth in the Christmas Handicap yesterday. With the benefit of those two races he may now be ready to return to his best form. Desert Cloud has shown more stamina .than previously in her recent efforts, and a slight improvement on her third in the Timaru Cup would make her prominent. Second Leg

Rise and Shine, Purser, Persia, and Beau Revere are four horses with speed which are expected to dispute the finish of the second leg of the double, the Toomey Memorial Handicap. Rise and Shine has failed to reproduce her best form since Labour Day when she was a decisive winner over seven furlongs at Rangiora. Some of her lacing since has been be-

yond that distance. Yesterday at Washdyke she xjras among the leading division 'over one mile and 35 yards until well into the straight. Her brilliance at six furlongs should staled to her here if the track is firm. Selections:— • 11.30 a.m.—Triali Plate: Foresee, Keep Clear.
