WOMEN’S CRICKET New Zealand Draws Test With England

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 30.

By playing out the last four balls of the last over of the day, J. Coulston, the last batsman, saved New Zealand from defeat in the second cricket test with England today and so left the match drawn. England scored 186 and 171 for seven wickets declared and New Zealand scored 130 and 204 for nine wickets.

This was the nearest New Zealand has ever approached to victory in a women’s test and assuredly this would have come about but for the outstanding performance of the English captain, M. Duggan, who scored 85 runs before she was caught behind the wicket—she seemed certain at that stage to secure a century before lunch —and who took five wickets for 47 while bowling 28 overs in New Zealand’s second innings. As on the first day, a persistent and uncomfortable drizzle handicapped the players, especially the bowlers.

Needing 228 to win in 210 minutes, New Zealand almost kept time with the clock, reaching 100 in 117 minutes and keeping up a strong attack by means of E. Dickson, V. Coutts and E. Paton, all of whom dominated the bowling for considerable periods. Dickson was snapped up at forward short leg by H. Sanders. Coutts was well stumped when she played inside a good length ball and Paton unluckily was given leg-before after snicking the ball on to her pads. In the last 40 minutes, England improved its chances of victory until held out by M. Speight, who batted brilliantly. The Englishwomen raced into position to play the last over in which Speight was run out, but Coulston, a left-hander, survived the last four balls.
