Australian Senator’s Death
(Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE. December 29 A former Senator, Mr George James Rankin died yesterday in Rochester District W,ar Memorial Hospital. Victoria. He was 70. Senator Rankin, shortly before he retired from politics in June. 1956, made headlines in Australia when he called the Indonesian Government a “gang of proJapanese Quislings.’’ Newspapers criticised Senator Rankin and the Minister for External Affairs. Mr R. G. Casey, apologised to the Indonesian Ambassador. Senator Rankin rose to the rank of major-general in World War I and won the Distinguished Service Order commanding the 4th Australian Light Horse.
