Chess J. R. Phillips Beaten At Dominion Congress

Youth succumbed to experience on Saturday in the second round of the championship section of the New Zealand Chess Congress being held in Christchurch when the joint national titleholder, Rodney Phillips, aged 15, was beaten by the veteran former New Zealand champion, D. I. Lynch, aged 47 The match was very hard and lasted four hours and a half.

Playing black, Phillips prejudiced his position by injudicious exchanges after he disregarded the opportunity of a perpetual position which would have drawn the game. It was expected that this game would be closely contested as both players are considered strong contenders for this year’s title.

Although Lynch gained this win over Phillips in the second round, he lost his game in the third round to It. A. Court. Phillips won his match in the third round against I. D. Hayes. F. P. Hutchings surprised by beating another veteran player, C. P. Belton, of Auckland, in the second round. Belton, playing black, was in difficulties after Hutchings had advanced his queen’s pawn which resulted in a series of forced exchanges leaving Hutchings a piece up for a pawn. From then on the material advantage forced the win for white. Consistent Play Playing consistently, R. M. O’Callaghan beat Belton in the third round match. In the same round, Lynch was beaten by the strong king side attack of R. A Court.

An unusual incident occurred in the second-class tournament when a player made two consecutive moves. The game was reconstructed and resumed at. the stage of the irregularity. The congress was officially opened on Friday by Mr H. R. Abbott, a former New Zealand and Canterbury champion ana visiting competitors were welcomed by the president of the New Zealand Chess Association (Mr R. M. Broadbent, of Christchurch).
