Eileen Gloss Surprises In Taranaki Second Leg

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. December 29. The New Plymouth mare Anacaprl graduated from hack ranks with a decisive win in the Taranaki Hack Cup, first leg of the double on the last day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting at New Plymouth on Saturday. The Waitara-owned and trained mare Eileen Gloss, which finished in the rear in the sprint on Thursday, showed sharp improvement to be a surprise winner of the second leg, the Inglewood Handicap. Eileen Gloss was the fifth favourite in a field of six and the double dividend for £1 was £5l.

The racing was held in fine weather, the track was firm, and there was a good crowd.

Starry Host, which finished first in the Farewell Hack Handicap, was relegated to third after an inquiry by the judicial committee. Erin’s Bridge, which finished third, was promoted to second, and Smitten, which finished second, was placed first.

J. P. Riordan, rider of Starry Host, was charged with having caused interference to Erin's Bridge over the last half-furlong. The committee found the charge proved after hearing the evidence, and Riordan was suspended until January 11. L Davl ». rttter of Searturn inthe Warea Hack Handicap, was charged with having caused interference to Hibiscus, Nova Stellb and Carowyn, in the first furlong. Davis was severely reprimanded for his handling of Searturn and the committee warned him against any further infringement of the rules. Mrs S. McGreal, part-owner of Eileen Gloss, winner of the Inglewood Handicap, was questioned by the judicial committee concerning the mare’s reversal of form. Mrs McGreal said that she considered the horse was slightly distressed after its race on the first day and had subsequently discovered that it had eaten its bedding. The explanation was accepted. The totafisator on course handled £39,151, compared with £42,943 on the second day last year. Results:—
