AUCKLAND, December 29.

The defeat of the 5 to 1 on favourite and fancied Auckland Cup candidate, Somerset Fair, at weight-for-age in the Clifford Plate was the highlight of the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting ■ at Ellerslie yesterday. Somerset Fair was beaten easily by Sigur and Moon Crest,

The only other starter was Somain and it was his rider, G. F. Hughes, who caused Somerset Fair’s downfall. Hughe& rode Somain vigorously; from the start and although Somerset Fait tried hard he could not head Somain over the first half-mile in 48 2-ssec. Somain was beaten apI proaching the home turn . and Somerset Fair forged ahead, but he had nothing in reserve. When Somain and Moon' Crest challenged with , a furlong arid a half to go, he stopped in a lew strides. Copernicus had his second’win for the meeting when he gained a last stride victory over Big Blow in the £2OOO Summer Cup, the first leg of the double. Gay Lodge was a fair third.

The second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Electric Handicap was woh easily by Japonica. The double paid £l7 for £l.
