COMMERCIAL MARKET FOR N.Z. BEEF
“U.S. May Become Important” The United States become an important market ] for New Zealand beef, in the view of Mr M. G. Laird, New Zealand meat manager for Dalgety fnd Company, Ltd. Mr Laird,! who has recently returned from a world tour, said in Wellingtop recently that drought, economic forces, and other causes had | decreased the herds of the United States. With an accompanying population increase, there appeared to be a potential market; for New Zealand. 1 The United States Government, said Mr Laird, was reluctant to permit the import of meat from South America because of the possibility of cattle diseases being transmitted to United Spates herds. However, he said, there did not appear to be much prospect for sales of New Zealand! lamb, as Americans were essentially beef, pork, and poultry eaters.
Mr Laird predicted ail expanding market for beef in Japan. A market had developed in long years of contact with j American occupation troops and; businessmen. The trend to meat had also developed, said Mr Laird, from the loss of Japan’s mainland territories in China, which had deprived Japan of the I ability to grow adequate quantities of rice.
