PLUNKET SHIELD

Second Game Today The Canterbury cricket team will begin its second match of the Plunket Shield series today at Lancaster Park against Northern Districts. For both teams it is an important match if they are to have a chance of Winning the shield. x Both teams began the' series with outright losses—Canterbury to Auckland and Northern Districts to, Otago—but neither v was disgraced in its showing. Canterbury was unable to provide more than token opposition to the pace bowling of J. A. Hayes in its second innings, but at Dunedin the reverse was the case. Northern Districts’ batsmen fell to the spinners. Such should not be the case in this match. Northern Districts will have D. B. Clarke and W Duncan to lead the pace attack, but neither of these bowlers is as fast or as accurate as Hayes. If the Northern Districts batsmen are susceptible to spin as they were at Dunedin, much will depend on B. A. Bolton, M. B. Poore and G. D. Alabaster if Canterbury is to secure a win. The Canterbury pace attack will be led by the two young players. J. H. Dawson and R. Motz, both of whom pre having their first season in first-class cricket. Motz, who was flown to Christchurch from Auckland yesterday, where he had been taking part in the Brabin Shield tournament, will be playing his first Plunket Shield match. He is still 17. $ The Northern Districts’ batting

side is a little suspect, although much is expected from the young

player, T. E. Shaw, a member of the colts’ training school, and a batsman of great promise. Both sides will announce their teams just 'before the match this morning. The 12 players in each side are as follows:
