Australian Cyclists Compete

Features of the Walmate Caledonion Society’s eighty-second annual sports meeting were the appearance of three Australian amateur cyclists (I. Browne, A. Marchant, J. Perry). Miss Valerie Sloper, R. Williams (New* Zealand decathlon champion), and M. Richards (pole vault champion). There was a large attendance at the meeting, which was held in fine, warm weather, and the gate taking* showed an increase of £3B on last year’s total of £3OO. ;One of the Australian cyclists, J. Parry, was thrown rather heavily when he caught his pedal in his first race. He suffered the dislocation of hl* left shoulder and abrasions, but after treatment at the Walmate Public Hospital he was able to return north with his companion*. The Australian riders practicaUy monopolised the amateur cycling events, providing thrilling finishes in both heats and finals. Their chief opponent, R. G. Collins (Upper Hutt), however, gained most points in the three mile lap race In which Marchant gained second place and Browne third. Miss Valerie Sloper gave a fine performance in putting the shot 50ft &y 2 in. Her appearance was given recognition wnep a presentation was made on behalf of the society by the president (Mr A. J. Mcßae). R. Williams, the New Zealand decathlon champion, just failed in his attempt on the New Zealand hop, step and jump record. A Walmate Caledonian Society reeord for tossing the caber, held by W. Davidson for a number of years, was bettered by a throw of 42ft 7in made by J. Cartwright.

An outstanding performance was given by K. Williams (Christchurch) in the three mile event. Williams hack almost a lap to make up in the 13}i laps, but he finished in fine style, running away from the field in the last lap. > M.
