DAIRY HERDS IN NORTH ISLAND
Highest Average ‘ ' To Friesians The honour of being the top producing herd under test in the North Island last season has gone to the pedigree Friesian herd of Mr W. C. Chynoweth, of Pukeroro, near Hamilton. The herd completed the season with an average of 13,638 pounds milk, 3.73 per cent, test and 508 pounds butterfat in 289 days for 48 cows. The average return of 484 pounds butterfat in the first 273 days the herd was under test was the best performance credited to any herd tested by the Auckland Herd Improvement Association up to the end of the association’s statistical year in June —an honour that the herd has gained for the last three consecutive seasons.
Twenty-seven of the mature cows yielded more than 500 pounds butterfat, six producing more than 600 pounds. With averages of 454, 483, 454, 511, 482 and 508 pounds butterfat for the six consecutive seasons since the introduction of the official pedigree test, the Pukeroro stud is ranked as one of the most ’consistent and highest-producing dairy herds in the country.
