Christmas Boom In Diamonds

Christmas has caused a boom in tljie diamond trade in Britain. “A scramble” in London and the north to buy diamonds has resulted in record buying, and sales? on the London market have increased by 20 per cent. THey have also increased sharply at Manchester, where wealthy businessmen are spending thousands on diamonds as presents and investments. A ' firm has sold more this Christmas than in the whole of its 209 ; wears’ lystory. “We’re not complaining,” said the managing director, “but we are fertainly surprised.’’ London traders are not surprised by the boom.. “Pfeople always buy diamonds in tynes of financial stress,” said a member of the National Jewellers’ Association. At Hatton Garden a spokesman said: “It is almost impossible to buy a fine quality diamond in the London market. The prices are proh bitive.”
