Japanese Ship Stuck In Ice

(Rec. 8.50 p.m.) TOKYO, December 27

The Japanese Antarctic expedition’s icebreaker, the 2700 tons Soya, was trapped in pack ice off Prince Harald Coast of the Antarctic Continent, the expedition headquarters said yesterday. Pack ice 10 feet deep brought the Soya to a standstill early on Christmas morning, about 140 miles from the Japanese winter base on Ongul Island. Messages from the ship received in Tokyo yesterday said she was not in danger and the ice was “melting faster than expected.”
