“Would Have Done The Same”
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright > ADELAIDE, December 27.
The veteran Australian polar explorer, Sir Douglas Mawson, said today that Sir Edmund Hillary and the leader of the British Traris-Antarctic Expedition, Dr Vivian Fuchs were not challenging one another to reach the pole first “Each has advised the other of his intentions.” Sir Douglas Mawson said. Sir Douglas Mawson said the New • Zealand party’s route, although a new one, had been surveyed from the air. Dr. Vivian Fuchs’s route entering the polar regions from the Weddell Sea was far more difficult and had not been surveyed before. “It is blazing a really new trail,” he said. “Because of severe crevassing and the unknown trail, Dr. Fuchs is about a fortnight behind schedule. ‘‘lf I had been in Sir Edmund Hillary’s place, I would have done the same thing—that is ask permission to go ahead rather than coo] my heels in one spot.”
