OTAGO LEADS AT DUNEDIN
154 Runs Ahead Of Northern
(New Zealand Press Asso'ciation) DUNEDIN, December 27.
dtago is in a sound position after the second day of the Plunket Shield cricket match . against Northern Districts here today. The southern team-gained a handy first innings lead of 37 and add 117 quick runs for the loss of three wickets late 1 in the afternoon.
The leg-spinner, A. McK. Moir, a contender for selection in the team to tour England next year bowled well to take four wickets for 58 runs from 32 overs. J. C. Alabaster, who bowled with Moir for a long' spell this afternoon could not match Moir’s steadiness, but he did take three wickets for 68 runs from 27 overs. There were few patches of bright cricket, although S. N. McGregor and J. Veitch hurried the score along for a time in Otago’s second innings. Generally, the fielding was good, but frequent misunderstandings between the batsmen almost caused several run-outs.
Throughout the morning, when play was twice interrupted by rain, the Northern Districts overnight batsmen, M. Langdon and W. Bradburn, scored slowly, although Bradburn opened his shoulders t several times shortly before his dismissal. Both of the Otago pace bowlers extracted life from the pitch when bowling from the Hillside end. W. Frame twice hit T. Puna near the heart before lunch, and Cameron did the same shortly after the resumption. Puna collapsed and had to be assisted from the field He returned to the crease after G. Tarr’s dismissal. E. C. Petrie batted impressively, but failed to \attack the bowling when it was obvious that the last few wickets were going to fall quickly. Moir was the outstanding bowler but Frame bowled very well in the morning session. Otago attempted to score quick runs jn the two hours after tea and was successful until the last half-hour, when negative bowling kept |the batsmen in check. In this period, T. Shaw bowled four consecutive maiden overs to J. R. Reid by aiming wide of the off stump. Scores: OTAGO First Innings (for seven wickets declared) .. •• 268 Second Innings • J. R.
