MASERATIS END RACING

“Too Expensive For Small Firm” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) MODENA (Northern Italy), December 1. The Maserati Motor Works—which won this year’s world championships—announced tonight that it would not take part officially in any motor races next season, either formula or sports events. Mr Omer Orsi, a director and son of the president, would nol reveal the plans of the Maserati works drivers, who include Juan Manuel Fangio, of Argentina, the reigning world champion.

The works would continue to make sports and touring cars and would place its workshops and engineers at the disposal of clients who wished to run privately in sports events during 1958.

Mr Orsi later said that the decision to withdraw from motor racing was reached after a careful examination of last season’s balance sheet which showed that the Maserati works had spent too much on racing. "Motor racing has become too expensive for a small firm like ours,” he added.
