Montgomery On Churchill

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 1. Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery last night attacked his fellow Army chiefs for “sniping” al Sir Winston Churchill in their war memoirs. In a television programme, “Man of the Century,.’’ to mark Sir Winston Churchill’s eightythird birthday. Lord Montgomery said: “His place in history is absolutely clear. My opinion is that he is the greatest Englishman of all time, and it makes me sad to see the way in which certain generals, who served under him in ! the last war, now criticise him and snipe at him, and write about how difficult he was. “He did more to ensure that we won the war than any other single man. “He saved our nation at a time when we were fighting for our existence, and the outlook was very dark. “There is one general who will never criticise him—and that is this one.’’

Lord Montgomery referred to Sir Winston Churchill as “chief among all my friends.’’ He was the only person outside Sir Winston Churchill’s family who was invited to share the birthday week-end.
