Territorial Waters
Sir, —A news item about an accident to a seaman in a Japanese fishing vessel en route from Tokyo to fish “in the vicinity of the Marlborough Sounds.” may have escaped the notice of your readers during the election campaign. How many realise the significance of this to New Zealand? Will it result eventually in our fish being taken to Japan, tinned there, and returned to New Zealand for sale? The ridiculous three-mile limit of territorial waters should be extended considerably and an efficient fisheries protection patrol instituted. It should be noted that some countries claim 200 miles as territorial waters, and a whaling fleet was arrested for infringing some time ago. Will the Government take steps to protect our interests in this matter?—Yours, etc., D. McMAHON. December 1, 1957.
