Kumera Cultivation
The Post Office has thought of a novel theme for its 1958 school savings bank calendar. The flyleaf to the calendar tells the story of the cultivation of the kumera and how its storing for the winter months showed the Maori to be a practical “saver.’’ The kumera New Zealanders now eat is descended from that introduced by an American whaler in 1819. It is not the vegetable brought to New Zealand by the Maoris. The calendar was designed and drawn by the New Zealand artist, E. Mervyn Taylor.
