Rommel's Armchair Has Good Home
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 2. The armchair used by Rommel while directing the Afrika Corps campaign at Alamein against the Eighth Army in 1942 now stands in front of a fireplace in a house at Bishop Auckland, County Durham. It is owned by Major Maurice Kirby, who ‘‘liberated’’ it when the German officers’ mess was overrun by the Durham Light Infantry during the Battle of Alamein. It was carried on the back of a truck through North Africa and Sicily and then sent to England. Major Kirby has had it covered to match his furniture. "It is one of the most comfortable chairs I ever saw in the desert,’’ he says.
