CURRENT NOTES
Mrs G. W. C. Smithson presided at a meeting of the Ladies Guild of the British Sailors’ Society. Final arrangements were made for the annual coin and bring and buy afternoon to be held in the St. Mary’s schoolroom, Merivale, this week. The half-yearly grant of £5O for the maintenance of the Seamen’s Institute, at Lyttelton, was passed for payment. It was reported that seamen in hospital and the sanatorium were visited, and provided with comforts. | The women’s group of f the Royal Empire Society .-held at Christmas party at" Elizabeth House yesterday. Mrs J. H. Powell presided. The entertainment consisted of a musical quiz, community singing and competitions which were won by Mesdames A. N. Vile and M. McPhail. Songs were sung by Mrs Rees Morgan.
Competitions were won by Mesdames T. W. Harker and J. Ringrose at the final meeting of the year of the Sydenham branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs S. P. Smith read “Wishing” and “Greet the Year.” Members stood in silence in memory of Mrs J. Linton.
The singing of carols gave an atmosphere of Christmas to the final meeting for the year of the Riccarton Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs S. M. D. Murray presided. Items were given by the choir, Mrs Middleton (recitations) and Mrs Anderson (pianoforte solos).
