“BALLET FOR FUN” CLASSES
Pupils Give Display A display of ballet dancing and exercises was given on Saturday afternoon to parents and friends by the pupils of the ‘‘ballet for fun” classes which have been conducted at the Y.W.C.A. this year. The display was held as a party for pupils and friends who have been interested in the classes throughout the year. Junior pupils showed the exercises and dances which they had learned since they joined the classes. Seniors then gave a display, with several simple ballets and solos, to show some of the exercises and steps they had learned through the course. The classes are held twice a week, for an hour in the afternoon. Some pupils have attended all classes held sinffe the ballet course commenced about three years ago. At that time, there were 10 pupils. Now there are 65. Th? pupils wear Y.W.C.A. basketball tunics during their exercises, but for the break-up party display they wore frilly ballerina skirts, ballet slippers, spangles and flowers, and looked like real dancers.
All the pupils had learned a lot of basic work and exercises for limbering up, as 'well as deportment, said their instructor (Mrs E. Smith), and several were very promising pupils. Mrs Smith is assisted by the accompanist (Mrs E. Brightling). The organiser (Miss Rosemary Barlee) said she was delighted with the results and progress achieved. As a mark of their appreciation for the work done by their instructor and the accompanist, the pupils presented Mrs Smith with a cocktail set and a bouquet, and Mrs Brightling with a bouquet.
