TROTTING First Two-Year-Old Race Run Next Week

Two-year-old racing for the season will begin on Saturday week when the second contest for the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes will be run over one mile and half a furlong at the Waimate Trotting Club’s annual meeting. Form of South Island youngsters is not as well disclosed as it was 12 months ago when the club first ran the £lOOO race, which ranks second to the £2OOO New Zealand Sapling Stakes in value among faces for two-year-olds. Several of the candidates for this year’s race started at trials at Waimate last month, while others will parade at trials at Washdyke today. Last season’s record-breaking yearling, Blue, was not entered

for the Waimate race, which at present has 19 acceptors. This number will have to be reduced to 15, the safety limit at the starting point. However, a ballot is unlikely to be necessary as sufficient withdrawals are expected to be received before next Monday. Two North Island-trained horses are certain to start in the race. They are Culater and Affiliate. Culater is trained by A. Bryce for Mr Noel Simpson, owner of the New Zealand Derby Stakes winner, Tobacco Road. Culater is by Intangible from Lady Merus. He has shown outstanding form in Auckland in recent weeks, winning convincingly at the three trials meetings at which he has paraded. His margins in all three wins were clear-cut. Culater is a certain starter in the Waimate race and he is reported to be well forward and

well seasoned. This should stand to him and he may prove too good for his southern rivals. Trained at Trentham Affiliate will represent the Trentham trainer, J. S. Hunter, who prepares him for Mr C. H. Boyton. Affiliate was an impressive winner at a recent trials meeting, his winning margin being five lengths. Had he been driven out, he could have increased that advantage. Affiliate is bred to be good, being a colt by U. Scott from Festivity, the dam also of Legislate, by Rey de Oro from the imported mare. Trix Pointer, winner of 14 races including a New Zealand Cup. Bred by Mr J. M Connolly, of Geraldine, he was bought for 400gns at the last yearling sales. Mr J. Peterson, of Gore, will have a promising colt in Smokey Diamond to represent him. Smokey Diamond was bred by T. H. Gunning and Mrs Gunning of Winchester, who sold him for 475gns at the yearling sales. Smokey Diamond has a big private reputation and his training runs at Gore, where he is trained by H. R. Reid, have been marked by rapid improvement in recent weeks. Smokey Diamond is a colt by Smokey Hanover from Bonny Volo. He is a half-brother to Gay Heritage, which won the Great Northern Stakes as a two-year-old. Mrs Gunning will be represented by Donna, which is closely

related to Smokey Diamond. Donna is trained by her husband, who will also have Some Lad in the Waimate race. Both have shown ability in private. Donna is a filly by Smokey Hanover from a smart race mare in Allanah. Some Lad is a colt by . Smokey Hanover from Sporting , Lady, by Lucky Jack from SpoTt--5 ing Girl, the dam of an outstand- ; ing winner in New Zealand and , Perth, Happy Man, and a useful ) pacer in Gay Lad. Jones’s Templeton team and is a filly by Whipster from Princess. She was originally trained in the North Island and showed considerable ability. Mr and Mrs A. J. Cunningham, of Halswell. who race Gay Cobra, have Sure Angela at Waimate. She is a filly by Whipster from Flin Flon and was bred at Tinwald by Mr T. W. Gudsell, who sold her for 240 gns at the yearling sales. She is trained by L. O. Thomas at Addington. The Washdyke trainer, P. P. Gallagher, has Young Kim, a gelding by Lochella from •Kimberley, both useful winners a few years ago. He will race at today’s trials. Ahumai. a filly by Light Brigade from Salutation, is trained by A. R. McKenzie at Hare wood for Mr A. V. Le Roi. She raced in a parade at Waimate last month and showed a useful turn of speed. Paddy’s Day is a member of G. McKendry’s Methven team. He is by Burns Night from a winner in Jet Propelled. Star Fighter, which raced in the parade at Kaikoura last month, is a member of D. G. Nyhan’s team. He is a colt by Johnny Globe from Ivy Earl. Another colt by Johnny Globe is trained by M. Holmes for the secretary of the Wyndham Trotting Club (Mr A. A. Wilson). This youngster is out of a smart race mare in Tactics, a daughter of Light Brigade. He has been named Adroit, and is dark bay in colour. He.is not very big, but is a good type of youngster.
