REPRESENTATIVE IN LONDON
Sir Clifton Webb Wants To Return (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, December 1. Sir Clifton Webb’s three years' appointment as High Commissioner was completed last week, and it is understood that he will return to New Zealand early next year at his own request. Although he was unwilling to be drawn into a discussion, it is believed that he indicated to Sir Sidney Holland in July that he did not wish his stay in London to be extended. Since then he has had correspondence with the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), and it is expected that an official announcement will be made soon. It is thought that Sir Clifton Webb wants to return home for several reasons. One is that his health has been indifferent and he recently underwent an operation. Sir Clifton Webb, who will be 69 next March, succeeded the late Sir Frederick Doidge in 1954.
