Problem of Peace

Sir,—N. M. Bell’s letter favours communism. This ideology has after 40 years’ trial, turned out to be a complete fiasco. Russia stands for imperialist militarism. Britain brought backward people up to modern standards. Russia enslaves enlightened peoples. The Russian rank and file could not aid peace even if they so desired since they are not free. Democracy is menaced by cold war attacks. The fear of bombs is universal, however. So long as the potential aggressor is likely to get as much as he gives, the cold war is likely to stay that way.—Yours, etc. T. SHAW. Westport, November 17, 1957.

Sir, —It may not be possible, as Mr T. Shaw infers, to secure peace on the same basis as war. But Western democracy, a hegemony subscribing nominally to divine protection, is surely guilty of inconsistency and interpreted faithlessness. Clergy and laity, we implore peace, yet stockpile more destructive machines hoping they can remain undestructive. As presently defenceless before developing satellite-missile warfare, we may require to submit our belief in an “architect of universe” to critical scientific test. Simply put, to say (or pray) to God, "It’s over to you.” And though the gesture provoke scorn in godless camps, to follow prayer by an outspoken repudiation of defensive violence. If, as we believe, God hears, our protection will rest in indomitable hands. But our opportunity may now be brief.—Yours, etc., FRANCIS Wm. HEAL. November 16, 1957.
