CONTROVERSIAL BILL ON EDUCATION
Government Powers In Singapore
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) SINGAPORE, November 19.
The Singapore Legislative Assembly yesterday passed a controversial Education Bill which will give the Government stricter control over schools. The bill allows the Government to refuse registration of a school if its student population exceeds 1200: authorises it to refuse to register anv school which has an “undesirable” name: and to prohibit the use of certain textbooks. In piloting the bill through its last stages, the Minister for Education (Mr Chew Swee Kee) said: “We must accept in good faith that reponsible officers will exercise their powers judiciously.”
