One of New Zealand’s leading all-round cricketers in his earlier years, Cyril Allcott, has entered for the first time in the Auckland open singles championships. He won the Mount Albert Club singles title last season, and was in the last six in the Auckland champion of champions event. Allcott played for New Zealand on three overseas cricket tours, and played in 82 first-class games. He represented three provinces at cricket—Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, and Otago.

A. Richards and P. Ellis scored a surprise win over W. Craib and G. Bennett in the second round of the Linwood Club championship pairs on Tuesday evening. However, Bennett skipped the winning four at the first mixed tournament held by the club this week. Twenty-four teams entered in the tournament.

The annual Sanatorium Day of the Cashmere Bowling Club will be held on December 2 and not December 12 as previously published.

Several clubs’ fours which will compete in the Dominion tournament played in the all-day tournament held by the Elmwood club —and several of the teams were unsuccessful at Elmwood. Thirtytwo fours competed in the tournament and both greens were full.

A well-known boxing administrator in Otago and also the president of the Otago Boxing Association, Mr F. M. Paape, also skips a four from the Kaituna Club in the weekly competition in Dunedin. Mr Paape has been connected with the boxing association for the last 25 years.

The Linwood bowlers in the four which finished third in the Dominion tournament held in Christchurch almost four years ago are competing again in this year’s tournament. The four bowlers, T. Harrall, G. Young. J. Plummer, and S. Snedden, are this time competing in two separate fours with other bowlers. Snedden will skip a team in which Young will play lead, W. Weaver No. 2, and W. Spencer No. 3.. Plummer (skip) will play with Harrall (lead), R. Maclachlan (No. 2), and L. T. Moore (No. 3) in the other four.

A bowler who is showing a great deal of promise at the Canterbury Club Is R. Brough. In his first year as a skip, Brough is playing very well in the club matches, and also made a good start in the Manning Cup competition by winning his first match. ' • Sydenham is planning to hold two all-day tournaments in late December and early January to cater for the visiting bowlers to Christchurch during the Dominion championships. The tournaments will be held on December 29 and January 5.

Wellington has nominated four bowlers for the New Zealand seven-man team of bowlers for the Empire Games in Cardiff next year. The prominent Hataitai pair, E. C. Budd and J. D. Turnbull, have been nominated for the Empire Games team pair, T.| W. J. Barron (Miramar) is the; singles nominee and W. H. Hamp-: ton, of Naenae, has been nomin-> ated for the fours.

Three of the less experienced bowlers at Elmwood who are showing promise are F. R. Cullen, R. Renton and Bert. Pearce. These bowlers are playing very well at Elmwood and Pearce was the winner of the club colts’ championship last season.

A full green took part in the first floodlight tournament of the year held by the Sydenham club this week. A large number of bowlers from other Christchurch clubs took part in the tournament and there were four Sydenham teams entered. These tournaments, which are becoming increasingly popular, will be held every Monday evening this season unless the weather is wet. They will then be held on a Wednesday.

The women of the newly-formed Rocky Nook club of Auckland, are experiences enough to give the club a good start in Auckland bowling this season. Among the 74 members of the club are the 1953 Dominion pairs winners, Mesdames G. McGehan and V. Meredith, Mrs M. Waters twice winner of Auckland centre’s open singles title and the centre fours winners, Mesdames V. Langdon, N. Booth, E. Webb and M. Watson.

Alec Besley, of Sydenham, is playing consistently well in the three fours competition. Skipping a different team each game, he has comfortably won his matches in the last thfee rounds of the competition.

Bowling fixtures arranged are:—Thursday, November 21: Cashmere and R.S.A. all-day tournaments. Saturday, November 23: Pennants and Three Fours, Robinson Shield. Sunday, November 24: South Brighton, Rangiora and R.S.A. tournaments. Monday November 25: Sydenham floodlight tournament. Wednesday, November 27: Riccarton Racecourse all-day tournament.
