Australian Players Selected

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 14. The Australian Davis Cup selectors today decided that this year’s Davis Cup team should have six players—five chosen now and one by the end of the South Australian tennis championships, which will begin on November 21.

The players chosen today were: Mai Anderson, Ashley Cooper, Roy Emerson, Neil Fraser and Mervyn Rose. They will come under the control of the Davis Cup captain, Mr Harry Hopman, immediately for practice and training.

A proposal for rises of up to £2 10s a week has been put forward by the National Union of Students on behalf of 60,000 university students who now receive State or council grants. State scholarship grants for students in Oxford and Cambridge colleges are up to £283 for 24 weeks of the term and a £25 allowance for the vacation. The union says that students estimate their term-time living costs them £l5 a week. They are asking that the annual grant should be raised to £483, including £7O vacation allowance. Students at London and other universities are asking for an annual grant of £355. The present grant is £272 for those who live in college. And they are asking £2BO to £295 for those living at home. The present grant is £176 to £l9l.

Sample budgets of weekly personal spending by groups of men students at Oxford show: cigarettes and drinks, Ils; newspapers, 2s |d: Cinemas, theatres, exhibitions, 5s lOd; laundry, 7s; coffees :nd snacks, 10s 6d.

Women students say that they spend nearly £3O a year on clothes and have another £l5 worth supplied by parents. Corresponding figures for men are £lB and £6.

In-college maintenance and meals cost about £2OO a year in Oxford and Cambridge and £l5O in London.
