NEW BRITISH REACTOR

Use To Advance Research

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, November 13. The Neptune, the zero energy nuclear reactor which will be used to advance research on nuclear propulsion of submarines, has started working at the Harwell Atomic Energy Research Establishment for the first time, according to a statement by the Atomic Energy Authority and the Admiralty.

The new reactor will help the design calculations for a landbased prototype submarine reactor for which civil engineering work has started in Scotland. The work with the Neptune will be carried out bv an Admiralty team at Harwell in association with authority staff.

The Neptune uses enriched uranium as a fuel and ordinary water as the moderator, no special cooling system being required as only a few watts heat will be generated. The reactor has been designed to allow rapid assembly of many different kinds of nuclear cores.
