MR AND MRS J. C. CHAYTOR KILLED

Motor Accident In Britain

Mr and Mrs John Clervaux Chaytor were both killed in a motor accident in Britain on Saturday, according to news received by the Chaytor family in Blenheim. The news came from Mr Chaytor’s sister, Miss Isobel Chaytor, of Picton, who is on a visit to Britain. Mr Chaytor, who was 61, was the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs J. C. Chaytor, of Marshlands, Blenheim. The family had a notable military record. Mr Chaytor’s eldest brother was the late General Sir Edward Chaytor. Another brother was the late Colonel L. C. Chaytor. formerly of Marshlands. A third brother. Colonel D’Arcy Chaytor, lives in Tamworth, England. Mr J. C. Chaytor also held the rank of Colonel. All were educated at Nelson College. Mr Chaytor attended the college between 1908 and 1914.; He was head prefect in 1914 and! a member of the Ist XV in the] same year. In World War I he served in the Royal Field Artillery of the British Expeditionary Force as a captain. He also held various regimental and staff appointments in World War 11. Between the wars Mr Chaytor lived in England. He was a director of the Alvis Motor Company, Coventry. He also had a farm at Failand, Bristol, where the family lived. Mrs Chaytor was a member of a well-known English family. Gisborne was named after her grandfather. Last year Mr and Mrs Chaytor and their two daughters, June and Jennifer, visited New Zealand to attend the Nelson College Centenary. Mr Chaytor performed the official opening of the college scriptorium as a memorial to old boys who died in the two world wars. Mention of the deaths of Mr and Mrs Chaytor was made at Nelson College assembly this morning by the headmaster (Mr B. H. Wakelin). The college flag flew at half mast today.
