LABOUR WEEK-END CLIMBING

Avalanche Warning By Club Trampers and climbers planning snow trips over Labour week-end are warned against avalanches and high rivers close to the Main Divide. The president of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club (Mr Jack Hayes) issued this warning yesterday afternoon.

"With the tremendous snowfall in the last three weeks, northwest winds and warm weather, and then a further fall of seven inches of snow last week-end there is the very considerable danger of avalanches.” he «:aid "Climbers should keep off snow faces and high snowfields, especially after the sun »s well up in the sky, and keep to the ridges. Extreme care should be exercised on any high area of snow.

"From now, until well into November, the snow is softening and is liable to move at any time. In addition to the snow danger, with the north-west winds forecast for this week, rivers will be well above normal and these too will be dangerous. A mountaineering school held last week-end up the Rangitata river reported high rivers and further snow. A few days more of nor'westers and the conditions will become worse.” Mr Hayes said.
