Nearly 40,000 Persons Not Yet On Election Rolls

WELLINGTON.’October 21. Though supplementary rolls for the General Election close in eight more days, the Chief Electoral | Officer (Mr L. Irwin) estimates: that there are still about 500 electors in each electorate who have not yet enrolled—approximately 40,000 in New Zealand. “This number comprises those waiting till the last minute to enrol and those who have become eligible to vote since the closing of the main rolls,” he said tonight. “I would remind these people that the last minute has nearly arrived, for Labour week-end falls within what little time is left of the enrolment period, with consequent interruptions to the mails.” Writs for the election would be issued on Wednesday, October 30. said Mr Irwin. All rolls would close on that day. However, enrolment forms sent by mail would be accepted by district registrars till midday the next day. As with the main rolls, European response to filling the

supplementary rolls has been good. Mr Irwin said, but the Maori response left much to be desired. Only a determined effort by all those having influence with Maori electors will see the Maori electorate rolls reaching reasonable proportions. Persons who had enrolled in time for the main rolls should check these rolls, said Mr Irwin. They were available for inspection at all post offices. More than 1.000,000 names had been printed and a few errors 1 were certain to have been made. Where a person found himself not listed, in spite of filling in a card, the quickest remedy would be to fill in another card for the supplementary rolls.
