Pitches were faster than usual at this time of year, and batsmen scored freely when the first matches in the Wellington senior cricket competition got under way yesterday. The highest scorer for the day was G. S. Lawton (Midland) who made 89; Details:—

University 263 (J. H. Oakley 49, J. M. Donald 46, M. W. H. Lance 44; P. R. Preston seven for 72) v. W.C.0.8. 36 for 1 wicket. Midland 216 (G. S. Lawton 89. E. W. Dempster 60. D. H. Searle 46) v St. Patricks Old Boys 29 for 4 wickets.
Wellington 152 (B W. Meale 41. R. Allen five for 29) v. Kilbirnie 95 for 3 (G. K. Mahoney 41).
