MOUNT PLEASANT CLUB

The Mount Pleasant Boating Club's season began badly on Saturday when confusion over the length of the course in the open class invitation race resulted in four yachts crossing the line one lap too soon.

Wind witch (D Dickey), the leading craft wrongly crossed the finishing line after two rounds instead of three, and was inadvertently flagged in by an official.

When Alan Burgess (Vision) and Cliff Papps (Horizon) saw Windwitch cross the line they assumed the officials had changed the course to two laps Another yacht, Coquette, sailed by M. Seiwood, finished also. The other 22 yachts completed the course.

After the race officials blamed the yachtsmen, and yachtsmen blamed officials. No inquiry was held. The president of the Canterbury Yachting Association (Mr W. H. Beanland) said that skippers should always make sure of their sailing instructions before they set out. Theoretically, officials should not tell yachtsmen their course as verbal instructions do not carry. Results:—
