TROTTING La Mignon Reaches Trotting Cup Class

The Light Brigade mare, La Mignon, became eligible to start in the New Zealand Trotting Cup next month when she outclassed a strong field in the President’s Handicap, the first leg of Hie double on the second day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s spring meeting on Saturday.

j La Mignon was well beaten in -third place in a similar race on . the opening day of the meeting, i but on Saturday she was in the (lead from the start and came • away from her opponents in the straight to win with a lot in hand, jit was a first-class effort. I Raced by Mr R. A. McKenzie, of Wellington, who will also have Highland Air to represent him in the cup, she is trained at Yaldi hurst by G. B. Noble. ' Don Hall raced up to his effort of the first day of the meeting by finishing second. He was forced wide early and was not disgraced. Prince Polka was a ifirm favourite for the race. He was three wide in the middle ' stages of the race, and, although lone of the leaders racing to the straight, he made no impression and finished near the rear. The second leg of the double, (the City Handicap, was won by the favourite. Auditor, which led over the last mile and fought off I challenges from Technician and Mi«hty Loyal in the straight. I The La Mignon—Auditor doubles combination returned £43 (Ils 6d for £l. The meeting was held in fine I weather before a large crowd. The track was in good order. Totalisator investments amounted to £75.127 ss, including £7718 5s on the double, compared with £56.361 15s last year. The total for the two days was £143.665. compared with £118,742 15? Easy for La Mignon La Mignon led from end to end to win the President’s Handicap. Lady Shona was with her at the end of two furlongs, but La Mignon was soon clear once more. This pair was ■ followed by Ricochet and Bedivus. i with one mile and a quarter to run. 1 with Paia Royal, Don Hall. Derive. 1 which broke for a second time, and ! drifted to the rear. Direct Hall. I Prince Polka, and Dresden Lady next. Don . Hall moved up three wide to be one % out behind La Mignon at the mile' post. La Mignon was shading Don Hall racing to the straight, with Prince Polka, Bedivus, and Dresden Lady next, ahead of Lady Shona. Direct Hall, Ricochet, and Derive. La Mignon was not really extended in the straight, and she won convincingly by two lengths and a half. In a great battle for the other placings, Don Hall took second, a head in front of Lady Shona. Don Hall was forced wide early and there was merit in his placing. Bedivus finished strongly in the straight, to be a neck back, fourth, with a nose to Derive, which did well to finish so close up after making several mistakes. Direct Hall was two lengths and a half back, sixth, ahead of Ricochet, with three lengths to Dresden Lady and the disappointing favourite. Prince Polka, which dropped out in the straight. Direct Hall and Derive lost ground at the start. Thunder in Form Thunder gained his first win since the last New Zealand Cup. and his first in a distance of less than one mile and five furlongs, when he outclassed the sprinters in the Recovery Handicap. Thunder began brilliantly for him. and was just behind Highland Air at the end of a furlong. He moved up to take the lead at the mile post, and was immediately challeneged by Wayward Peter, which had no chance of wresting the lead and was soon steadied. Thunder was still pacing easily racing to the straight, where Wayward Peter and Highland Air were just behind him. ahead of Scottish Fair, Gay Lad, and Ricochet. His opponents made no serious impression on Thunder over the last furlong, and he won with plenty in reserve by a length and a quarter. Highland Air. after being close to the lead all the way, was a decisive second, Scottish Fair getting up for third a length and a quarter back. Scottish Fair raced up to his first day form and is due for a change of luck. Wayward Peter tired slightly in the run home, and was two lengths back, fourth, ahead of Ricochet, with 10 lengths to Gay Lad. Spring Walk appeared to check I Super Royal at the start. The lastI named met further trouble when i Direct Hall broke with about four ■ furlongs left, Bedivus also suffering 'a check. The Second Leg i Auditor, the favourite, gained a good win in the City Handicap, the second leg of the double. Lord Balfour was first out. Technician passI ing him at the end of three furlongs. Auditor raced clear a furlong further on, and he was still pacing ' well within himself racing to the straight, where he was a length and a half in front of Technician and i Mighty Loyal. Pole Star was tiring six lengths back, clear of Lord Balfour. Auditor was strongly challenged by Technician, and then Mighty , Loyal, but he fought on to win de- : cisively Technician had every chance, but found Auditor too good. Technician ' has raced well lately, and his luck must soon change. i Mighty Loyal, which started from ; 24 yards, put in a long run over the 'last half-mile, and he was right up I third. 15 lengths in front of Mooloo. ■ with Drioli next, ahead of Pole Star. Lord Balfour, and Catamaran. i Egyptian Queen, Pole Star. CrimIson Star, and Catamaran lost ground I early. Johnny Derby collided with i Crimson Star at the end of a furlong, and lost his driver. Both horses were pulled up. Results:— WELCOME HANDICAP, Of £325. Trotters. 3min 53sec class. One mile and five furlongs. 3. 4—N. L. Berkett and J. X.
