LEPRECHAUN BEATS MOTUEKA AT ORARI

Leprechaun, which had failed to show form at his previous starts this season, finished brilliantly in the straight to win the President’s Handicap, principal event and first leg of the double, at the Geraldine Racing Club’s second spring meeting at Orari on Saturday, going away by half a length from Motueka. outside the furlong Whipsnade moved ♦hrough to challenge Undergrowth on the inner, and Fair Summer and Desert both finished strongly on the outer. Fair Summer soon mastered the other three, and came away ot win well. Results

Obviously suited by the firmer footing at Orari—he had failed in his two starts at Westport on a soft track the previous weekend—Mrs J. W. Woodhouse’s Treasure Hunt gelding, capably handled by B. S. Finlayson, who was also successful later in the day on Brown Treasure, galloped strongly throughout the President’s Handicap and after following Assembly and Motueka into the straight had little difficulty in mastering those two inside the last furlong. Fair Summer, which failed at his last start at Wingatui, but was runner-up to Water Boy in the corresponding event at the first spring meeting at Orari, on September 23, gained his first suecess for the season in the second leg of the double, the Stewards’ Handicap. R. W. Gould had Fair Summer in a trailing position behind Undergrowth and Litmus to the straight, where he was brought out to make an effective challenge. He mastered Undergrowth at the furlong and only had to be kept going to beat Desert Cloud by half a length. In a total double pool of £12.276 Leprechaun carried fis4| 10s units.

On-course investments amounted to £22,445, including £2055 on the double, compared with £21,318 10s last year, an increase of £1126 10s. President’s Handicap

Nasib, which was restless at the barrier, was badly left, and Fleur and Smuggles quickly drifted to the rear at the start of the President’s Handicap. Sumner made the early pace, and with a mile to run led Golden Morn, Motueka, King Robin and Leprechaun, which were al length intervals, then Assembly and Coin’s Edge, with 12 lengths to Smuggles and lengths to Fleur and Nasib. Sumner remained in charge to the half-mile, where Assembly went clear by a length. Assembly led into the straight from Motueka and Leprechaun, with three lengths to Coin’s Edge, King Robin and Golden Morn, which were handiest of the others. Motueka wore down Assembly at the furlong, but Leprechaun, keeping up a strong run on the outer, mastered Motueka inside the last 100 yards to win going away by half a length. Assembly held third place easily, three lengths back, a similar margin ahead of Coin’s Edge. King Robin and Golden Morn followed at length intervals, with two lengths to Fleur, and a gap to Smuggles. Nasib and Sumner at the rear. The Second Leg Fair Summer gave the Orari trainer, T. W. Reilly, his second training success of the day when he ran on strongly to beat Desert Cloud by half a length in the second leg of the double, the Stewards’ Handicap. Undergrowth was a neck back third, half a head In front of Whlpsnade. Column was -running on fifth, ahead of Writer and Teaka. The others, headed by Litmus, were eight lengths back

Teaka and Happy received the worse of the start. Undergrowth began best to lead Fair Summer. Teko. Litmus and Whlpsnade. At the end of two furlongs Litmus had moved up to be at Undergrowth's girth, with two lengths to Teko and Fair Summer, which were together, and a similar distance to Whipsnade. Desert Cloud was a further two lengths back, three lengths ahead of Writer and Column together, then seven lengths to Happy and two to Teaka. Undergrowth continued to make the pace to the straight from Fair Surfimer, Desert Cloud, which had moved up quickly on the turn. Whipsnade and the tiring Litmus. Just
