GROSE MEMORIAL CUP

Avon Rider Wins D. Lyes (Avon) was the first rider home in the Frank Grose Memorial Handicap race conducted by the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were good, but on the outward journey there was a cross wind at times strong. The course was from Papanui up the North road almost to Leithfield, to Sefton, to Rangiora and back to Papanui. The scratch riders rode well over the first part of the journey, and at Sefton had reduced their handicap to the break riders by 30sec. From Sefton back to the finish, the break men improved their positions, and at the end of the 50-mile race, they had picked up Bsec on the scratch riders. The 17jmin riders held together well and were gradually gaining on the limit riders, off 25min. In the final sprint three riders off the 17Jmin mark disputed the finish, with Lyes winning by lsec from M. Coombe (Papanui). There was a hard struggle for fastest time, and only o.4sec separated the first three with T. Cameron (Christchurch) holding on to take time honours from R. Fowler (Avon) with H. Bush (Papanui) third. Abbreviations used in the results are: Avon (A.), Christchurch (C.), Papanui (P.).

Results were:— D. Lyes (A.) (17jmin), 2hr 7min 39sec. 1; M. Coombe (P.) (17Jmin), 2hr 7min 40sec, 2; G. Robertson (A.) (17imin). 2hr 7min 40.4 sec. 3: P. Burgess (P.) (25min), 2hr 18min 24sec. 4; G.
