CLUB HONOURS MOUNTAINEER
Mr Norman Hardie
One of New Zealand’s leading mountaineers. Mr Norman Hardie, of Christchurch, has been elected a life member of the New Zealand Alpine Club in recognition of his work as deputy-leader of the British expedition which climbed Kanchenjunga. the worlds third l highest mountain, in 1955, and in recognition of other Himalayan! activities. The club has only five: other life members—Sir Edmund Hillary, Mr George Lowe. Mr R. Ellis and Mr J. A. Sim. of Dunedin. and Mr S. A. Wiren, of Wellington. Mr Hardie was a member of the New Zealand Alpine Club expedition to the Himalayas in 1954. His book. “In Highest
Nepal,” was published early this year. It is based on explorations and studies of the life and customs of the Sherpa people he< conducted after the Kanchenjunga! expedition. He was elected a life member! at a meeting of the club’s generalcommittee in Christchurch during! the week-end. The committee also elected Dr. Charles Evans an honorary member of the club. Dr. Evans was a member of the British expedition which climbed Everest, and leader of the Kanchenjunga expedition, and has been associated with New Zealand hr unbln g Parties in the Himalavas.
