The Wolfenden Report

Sir,—Few, it is hoped, will share the self-righteous attitude of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who deems homosexuality a “sin.” As one writer has truly stated: “The fool hath said in his heart there is no God: but the greater fool hath said that God is not in all His works.” From Constantine onwards, the persecutory zeal of the church has been responsible for the legal position as it exists today. Bigotry is only the lesser of two evils, of which forcible intervention by the State is the greater. It is regrettable that the Archbishop does not display the tolerance shown by all reputable authorities on this subject, such as Dr. Peter Fletcher and Dr. Kenneth Walker. No finer Christian appreciation of sex is to be found than that expressed in their book. “Sex and Society.”—Yours, etc., END LEGALISED PERSECUTION. September 30. 1957.
