DEATH PENALTY REFERENDUM
Postponement Sought By Church Council
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. October 1.
'Die whole country would be relieved if the projected referendum on capital punishment to be taken in conjunction with the General Election this year was postponed, the chairman of the New Zealand Inter-Church Council on Public fAffairs (the Rev. J. S. Somerville) said today. Mr Somerville said that while the members of his council differed in their views on the death penalty itself, they were unanimous that the referendum on this subject was inadvisable at the moment.
The election was only eight weeks away and Parliament had shown no sign yet of giving legislative approval for the referendum. It was hardly sufficient time for a matter of such gravity to be considered, he said
