ST. ALBANS SEAT

Labour PartyCandidate

The Labour Party candidate for the St. Albans seat is Mr N. G. Pickering, of Timaru, who is South Canterbury representative for an insurance company. His selection was announced last evening.

There were six nominees for selection. Mr D. J. Scott, who was selected originally, withdrew for health reasons. Two of the nominees were Mr R. H. McDonald, president of the Canterbury district council of the Federation of Labour, and Mr E. J. Bycrott, civil administration officer for Southern Military District. Mr Pickering was a Labour P-rty organiser in Southland in 1948, contested the Awarua seat in the elections of 1949 and 1951, and the Waimate seat in 1954. He then joined the head office staff of the Labour Party as a research officer, until he was appointed South Island organiser for the party from 1953 to 1956. Earlier, Mr Pickering was a member of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union and a representative cricketer, and is now vice-presi-dent of the South Canterbury Rugby Referees’ Association.
